CHAPTER – 1

Media was having a field day. Respected Home Minister Khaleel Khan’s fifth begum has hoisted a complaint against him for domestic violence, with attempted physical abuse, rape and murder charges. With the elections around the corner, this has come as a big blow for the minister and the MAF party. While party and Khaleel Khan are busy with serious damage control, opposition party is engraving the matter. All news channels were covering this news.

Kochi [Kerala]

While all this chaos was going on, many families were going through their daily routine unperturbed. Anjali as usual got up at 5 o’clock and got busy with house chores. She had to prepare breakfast and pack lunches for her husband and sons. Then she went to wake her husband. Ashok got up as usual complaining about the new day, his wife’s tardiness, piled up office work, his grumpy boss, kids’ laziness, how the water is not hot enough for his bath, that his dosa hasn’t fried well, curry is salt less, his shirt has creases as it’s not ironed properly, his lunch box is not washed well and finally his usual complaint, that his biggest misfortune is that he is married to Anjali.

While he went on about his usual laments, Anjali went about her duties devotedly. She made sure everything is set for his bath; food is served hot and got her 3 sons ready for school. She knew her husband’s nature and never expected a word of appreciation or help and went about her chores unaffected. So as usual she got late for office. Amidst all this she didn’t have time for Khaleel Khan or his endless list of begums.

But as soon as she reached Secretariat, she was filled in with this latest news by her colleagues. After signing attendance, all were busy discussing the hot news of the day. Her colleague Prabha was accounting all the crimes Khaleel Khan had committed before and how he got scot-free each time. Ramesh, who has leanings towards MAF party, was of course supporting Khaleel Khan with all vigor. Though Anjali heard all this, she just smiled at her colleagues and went about her work while putting in a word or two of gossip and comments in between....as if this news of a woman being physically abused didn’t matter at all. That it changed nothing in her world, or is of any value in her contended life.

Bangalore [Karnataka]

In another state, again the matter wasn’t entirely different. Thara got up as usual at 4 o’clock. Her husband had to leave for job by 7 since he had a one hour travel to his office. So she was busy in kitchen. At 6, her husband Raghuram got up and switched on the TV for news before entering the bathroom. Sharp 7, she saw him to the door well fed and ready for office. He kissed her forehead while she smiled and waved for him till he disappeared inside the lift. Then she went to wake her son. He was just 4 years old but had his nursery. As usual the baby was cranky in the morning but Thara managed to bath him and got him ready for the crush. She then took the wheel and dropped him at the nearby crush and went for some grocery shopping. Some years back, she used to talk about politics, poverty in the country, social evils, and ways for empowerment, patriotism; but now all she could focus upon was the price of onion, tomato, potato etc.

She spent her time in a mall and spent some more money on shopping till her son could be collected from the crush. Once back home again she didn’t rest until her son had his lunch and went for his noon nap. It was time for her nap too. But she switched on the TV for latest news updates just to be in touch with the happenings of the world. Some habits die hard. That’s when she chanced upon the news of Khaleel Khan. Now more comments and news bites were being fed on TV by media as they have got a chance to interact with Khaleel Khan himself. He has swiped away the news as fake and that he will get to the bottom of this soon. But the media still speculated the reasons and consequences of this news over and over again. They mentioned that Khaleel Khan’s fifth wife has registered her complaint with Tejaswi Ram, S. I. of Calicut district.

Calicut [Kerala]

While Thara was engrossed in the news, at the real venue of these events things were heating up. Tejaswi Ram was having a tough day. But she had expected none less. Her superiors were going haywire with this news. She was called to Commissioner’s office for explanation. Commissioner was angry for her drastic act of registering such a case without consulting them. But Tejaswi answered all his queries with her practiced indifference.

Tejaswi: I just did my job sir.

Commissioner: Don’t talk to me in that tone Tejaswi. You know that this is not a normal case.

Tejaswi (in a mocking tone): Why....because it’s against a minister?

Commissioner: Tejaswi, mind your words. When a minister or any other powerful authority is involved, then obviously the case will gain attention. And you can’t be sure if the complaint is genuine; so you have to think twice before taking action. You must have informed your superiors first. And why did you inform the media about it?

Tejaswi: I didn’t sir. The woman herself gave a press conference.

Commissioner: Do you think we are fools, to not understand that it was your idea?

Tejaswi (in a straight voice): If you accord me with such brilliance of mind, I’m honored sir.

Commissioner: Stop it. Do you think all this is a joke?

Tejaswi remained silent for a moment and gave a cold stare to her senior before she went and closed the door of his office from inside. Constables waiting outside sniggered.

Constable 1: Commissioner is finished!!!!

All of them laughed.

Commissioner: What are you doing Tejaswi?

Tejaswi: Nothing sir, I wanted to have a talk with you and I don’t think you will prefer your subordinates to be a witness of it.

Commissioner: Tejaswi, I repeat is all this a joke for you? Don’t you realize the seriousness of the issue at hand?

Tejaswi (in a voice that reflected controlled anger): With all due respect sir, I have the same question. A woman has been subjected to domestic violence of the ultimate kind for 11 long years. She was raped each night and even choked to death few times. Which part of this complaint do you think is not serious or not worthy of taking action?

Commissioner (sighing): Hmm. I know Tejaswi. But you also know how law works in our country. Politicians are the supreme authority in our system and we have no other choice than to obey them. If not the consequences will be...

Tejaswi: I don’t know about you sir, but I have worn this Khaki to serve the common man and not any politician. And I will do that no matter what.

Commissioner: I understand your anger Tejaswi. But anger won’t take you anywhere. Khaleel Khan is very influential and yes I’m ashamed to say this but our system will bend to his orders. Also he is the Home Minister and we police force cannot disobey our minister. No matter how much of a scoundrel he is.

Tejaswi: Maybe you are right sir. But Tejaswi won’t bend before him. I will make sure Azmia Khaleel Khan gets justice.

Commissioner stared at Tejaswi for a long moment and then said in a resigned tone.

Commissioner: I’m send here to warn you of the consequences and compel that woman to withdraw her complaint. Can you please send in that woman?

Tejaswi: Sure sir.

She saluted him and left the room. A while later there was a knock at his door.

Commissioner: Come in

In walked Azmia Khaleel Khan, her head held high and a determination that reflected through her whole being but her face devoid of any emotion. Commissioner Krishna Kumar had a feeling that this is a battle he was not going to win. After few minutes, he realized his intuition was indeed bang on. Azmia Khaleel Khan was a young girl, maybe not even 30. But her eyes spoke of suffering and her words reflected rebellion. Her astute calm nature in contrast to Tejaswi’s rueful calmness proved to him that this girl is not going to back out.

Commissioner: Ok, now it is up to you. It was my duty to forewarn you of the consequences of fighting such a powerful minister. It is a sure shot that you won’t get justice but just public molestation. I’m sorry, but that’s the hard truth.

For the first time that day, a small nervous smile made way to Azmia’s lips.

Azmia: I know sir. I did not take up this battle with the hope that I will win against the great leader of Indian MAF party.

She paused for a while before continuing in a low voice.

Azmia:  But this is my fight for survival.... I cannot.... go on like this anymore. Either I have to fight or die; I choose to fight.... If I could do at least one percent of the damage he did to me, to his political image, then that is the biggest achievement of my life.

Commissioner: Do you really believe this will affect him? He has been convicted of murder, rape, illegal arm trade, involvement with terrorists. We did have evidence too but we could not touch him. Legislature, Democracy, Judiciary everything bows down before such criminals. And we are left with mud stains on our hand.

Azmia looked down for a moment.

Azmia: I don’t know sir. Maybe.... I’m fighting a lost cause. Maybe..... this will bring me more harm than good. But I want to challenge him.... I....I want to see his feathers ruffled for once....because of me. I want his sleep, peace of mind, his arrogance all shaken for....for at least a minute.

She sighed and wet her dry lips.

Azmia: He might have never expected that I will go to this extend; that I will have the courage to fight him....openly, especially with the election campaign going on. After all, he had tried his best....to subdue my spirit, tried to break me.... to....to tear me down to such a level that I never raise a finger again at him.

She took a deep breath.

Azmia (with earnest eyes): I want to prove him wrong sir.

Her eyes looked at him with utmost sincerity and a deep fire burning in its amber. Commissioner remained silent before the stoic determination of this woman. But he knew what is awaiting her. He just wished that this girl will at least be able to collect the pieces of her life after everything is over.

[Like in the past, I’m offering three language casts for all characters for the convenience of my readers’ belonging to different languages. But one of my friends suggested it is best to have only one set of cast which is a mix of artists from different languages. So the final cast, I’m providing as a list below. Each of my reader can choose the faces they want either from their own language or the final mixed language cast I’m providing.

  • ·        TEJASWI –      Sonakshi Sinha

Occupation: Sub – Inspector of Police
Relationship Status: Still Single, Thank You
Virtue: Different, Authoritative, loves and dedicated to her job
Flaws: Anger, arrogance, attitude, indifference
Biggest Dream: Already fulfilled; joining the police force

Is Tejaswi another adaptation of Angry Young Woman or is there more hidden behind that tag name? Tejaswi is in for a ride to realize some life lessons before it’s too late.

KAF (Kites are Flying) will take this ride with Tejaswi.

2.      DEEPIKA PADUKONE/ PRIYAMANI/ MANJU WARIER as THARA RAGHURAM/ THARA MAHESHWAR ( Thara)

Age: 30
Education: BA Lit (2009-2012), MA Literature (2012-2014), MSc. Maths(2014-2016)
Occupation: Housewife
Relationship Status:  Married for 6 years
Children: 4 year old Son

Vice: Can’t take decisions on own because of her upbringing, a detached person to everything that doesn’t interest her. Not a perfect cut out for ideal wife and mother role.
Biggest Dream: To qualify Civil Service and serve the country

Thara’s story is not uncommon in our society. A woman of substance held hostage inside the invisible threads of male dominated world. She is expected to wither away in the clout of patriarchal society around her.

Will she be able to achieve her dream of decades? Or will she become a weed over the decades? It is for KAF to explore....

3.      KANGANA RANAUT / NITYA MENON / PARVATHY MENON as AZMIA BILAAL/ AZMIA KHALEEL KHAN (Azmi)

Age: 29
Education: BA Literature (2009 – not completed)
Occupation: Housewife
Relationship Status: 11 years of intolerance to continue or not?!
Virtue: Headstrong girl with dreams and talent; doesn’t go down without a fight, a bold soul
Vice: Belonged to a poor orthodox family which didn’t value a woman’s life
Biggest Dream: WAS to be educated and qualified enough to support her family. In simple words, be an ACHIEVER in life.

The actual purpose of a burqa worn by a Muslim woman is meant to protect her purity, by concealing her body. But the truth is, often it conceals not just the body. Azmia Bilaal aka Azmia Khaleel Khan is a proof of this statement. Religion is a way to God; but some use it as a cross road to hell. A budding rose was nipped in the bud; but Azmia stands for a brave soul. Even if she was not allowed to blossom, she for one won’t get withered away.

KAF is the story of Azmia’s struggle against her burqa, the orthodoxy practiced in the name of religion and above all the fate that was casted upon her. It is the fight of her life, for a life, and finally to a life.

4.  Kongana sen / SNEHA / KAVYA MADHAVAN as ANJALI PRAKASH/ ANJALI ASHOK ( Anju)

Age: 31
Education: BA literature ( 2009-2012)
Occupation: Government Job, Secretariat
Relationship Status: Married for 10 years
Children: 3 sons
Virtue: Very cultured and traditional, loves her husband no matter what, dedicated completely to her family, loving and caring to others
Vice: very cultured and traditional, loves her husband no matter what, dedicated completely to family, loving and caring to others and none to own soul
Biggest Dream: To be the perfect wife, mother and have the perfect family that is often portrayed in the Utopian dream!

She ran all her life trying to please others, fulfilling others ‘expectations of her. She never had a moment to take respite from this mad race, for herself. First it was about being the obedient daughter who made her parents proud. Then it was about being the well behaved daughter-in-law and the perfect wife. Then motherhood came knocking and that became another field to prove her credentials. In short, a girl who forgot to realize the meaning of ‘HER SELF’!

KAF deals with how Anjali Ashok learns about herself. It is a tale of Anjali’s discovery of her ‘self’.

5.      VIDHYA BALAN/ ANJALI / MALLIKA as ESTHER EVA EPPAN/ ESTHER EVA LOIS ( Eva)

Age: 31
Education: BA Literature (2010-2012), MA Literature (2012-2014), B.ed
Occupation:  Teacher at St. Mary School
Relationship Status: 6 years of happily ever after
Children: One daughter and one son – 5 and 3 year old
Virtue: Capable, perfectionist, God fearing, obedient, well mannered
Vice: Cleanliness freak, obsessed with four person syndrome, a tiny winy bit of inferiority complex, and a bit too fond of luxurious lifestyle
Biggest Dream: To have her own fairy tale with her prince charming and angel like kids!

A girl born and brought up in a God fearing middle class family tends to have some common traits. Like for example, she is God fearing, values family and relations a lot, knows the value of money and handles it carefully, tends to be responsible and capable in a very early age and have life goals that are realistic and practical for herself. Esther also had these qualities. But she was not just a commoner. She had fire inside her which she douched for practical reasons. For her, having a job is more important than establishing a career. Security and stability is more important in a married life. Protection and care is what she expects from the institution of family. Amidst all this practicality, the feisty Esther got lost.

Will Esther evolve herself from the graveyard she pitched for herself? It’s for KAF to say.

6.      KALKI koechlin/ TASPSEE/ SHRINDA as JOANNA JOYCE (Jo)

Age: 29
Education: BA literature (2010- 2012 batch), Bachelor in Journalism and Mass communication (BJMS)
Occupation: Journalist
Relationship status: Still Married, No thank you
Children: One daughter – 3 year old
Virtue: Cool, easy going, takes life as it comes, strong and bold in her own style
Vice: Never shows her real emotions and has a violent streak at times, an air of superiority complex
Biggest Dream: To become a successful ‘and’ satisfied individual.

She is someone you can never figure out fully. At one moment, she is the most strong and sensible, play it cool kind of a person. And at the next, she will be at your throat screaming her lungs down if need be. She is the perfect blend of coolness and violence, of sensibility and immatureness.

KAF is also the bildungsroman (coming-of age) of Joanna Joyce and how she deals with the situations in her life shedding her ego.

7.      RADHIKA APTE / KRITI KHARBANDA / RIMA KALLINGAL as GAURI KRISHNA/  GAURI MADHAV

Age: 29
Education: BA literature (2010-2012), MA Literature (2012-2014)
Occupation: Credit officer, Union Bank
Relationship Status: Married for 10 years, will be divorced in months
Children: One daughter ( 5)
Virtue: Practical, down to earth, sensible, mature, realistic
Vice: Have fewer aspirations from life; often very hard on herself.
Biggest Dream: Dreams are not for real life...

She is a girl who only wanted a normal life - a secure job, a loving family and security in life. And she had it all and was really happy with her life. But suddenly when the wild card in the deck threw away her well planned life for the next 30 years, she could do nothing but pick up the leftover pieces and start over.

Will she be able to, forms one part of the crux of KAF.

8.      PARINEETI CHOPRA/ GENELIA D’ZOUSA/ BHAVANA as AARADHYA ABHIRAM ( Aaru)

Age: 29
Education: BA literature (2010-2012), MA Literature (2012-2014)
Occupation: Handling father’s business, and philanthropist
Relationship Status: Happily married for 7 years now
Children: One son (6) and twins – 2 daughters (3)
Virtue: Frank, good at counselling/advising, mature, persistent, strong mindset
Vice: Lazy, aimless, judgmental, frank, has a pinch of ego and superiority complex
Biggest Dream: To love passionately, to work passionately, and to live with contentment

She is someone who wishes to be invisible and spent most of her life inside her beautiful home away from the noises of the world. She wants a simple life, where she is available for all the needs of her kids, be a loving wife to her husband and have a decent lifestyle with nothing excess or less. And she got a straight out of a fairy tale prince charming for husband, lots of children whom she loves, financially successful life and a business heritage to take forward. To top it, she is also involved in social services which seem to be her cream area. She fairly had an easy life and anyone would wish for a life like hers.

But is her life as easy as it seems? Or are there fissures on the wall? Fairy tales are loved and cherished by majority but how does it feel to live one? It’s for KAF to tell us.

Aaradhya is going to be the spokesperson for the majority of the story.

KITES ARE FLYING

PROLOGUE

College days.....

The most wonderful period of life....

Matargasti, jawaani, deewani, badameez dil, tamasha.....you can pull out any of the Ranbir-Deepika film titles or songs to describe this period in your life. It’s all of that and more....

Life will never be the same before or after it....that is one unique experience....

College is the best time in everyone’s life. You blossom, grow and evolve on one side; but on the other side you never grow up and indulge in all kinds of nautankis and mastis that you could do in one lifetime. This is true for men and women alike but with a slight difference. For majority of women, college is the only time when they get to do all this...

8 individuals......

8 varieties of characters.......

8 different lives.....

Bond together by a single thread of friendship.......

Days, weeks, months, years of your life.... where you are leaving the innocence of childhood and accepting the maturity of adulthood....you do that with your friends, alongside them....

And once adult life arrives, friendship fades away before other priorities of life. Each one has to move on with their respective lives....and what are left are just the memories.....

The friendship, which was the biggest thrill....fun....the moments of ecstasy in your life till then..... leaves without a warning from your life. Same happened with the 8 girls/women of this story.

But after 8-10 years of college, after years of giving up friends and friendship for family, career and other priorities; when you find yourself at cross roads with these same priorities, the life you have build until then....... that old bond of friendship calls out to each of them.

Will their friendship help them in their individual lives? Will they be able to help each other in much more ways than they expected? Or will it just be an awkward reunion where they find themselves grown over their friendship?

Kites are Flying is going to explore the lives of these 8 women with their friendship at its backdrop.

Hope you will be with me in this ride too. This is not an Arnav-Kushi story. But this will be that one tale which all of you could relate or might relate to years later after experiencing some of it in your own life. I hope, you guys will be with me despite Arshi fandom and give me your valuable suggestions and comments on blog and help me develop myself and yourself along with this story in coming days.

Since it’s not an Arshi fan-fic I can’t post it on IF or MED. So I will be posting this on my blog. I hardly have readers who comment there and it has not bothered me till now since I got reviews from IF and MED. But now, this story solely depends on your comments on blog. Hope you guys will be gracious enough to encourage me with this new venture. This story is very important to me. It has shades of my own life as well as people whom I know and of course a generalized imagination of mass population’s life in India. I’m not intending to hurt anyone but like all my other stories reality will be kept intact while you all know that I don’t forget the entertainment factor a good cinema/story should offer.

Waiting to know your response guys. Only then I will decide when to start with this one.

Please do read and comment on blog itself. Blog is open to all. Hence you can easily comment there. If any difficulty let me know.
