CHARACTER SKETCH

[Like in the past, I’m offering three language casts for all characters for the convenience of my readers’ belonging to different languages. But one of my friends suggested it is best to have only one set of cast which is a mix of artists from different languages. So the final cast, I’m providing as a list below. Each of my reader can choose the faces they want either from their own language or the final mixed language cast I’m providing.

  • ·        TEJASWI –      Sonakshi Sinha
  • ·        THARA    -       Priyamani
  • ·        AZMIA     -       Parvathy Menon
  • ·        ANJALI    -       Kavya Madhavan
  • ·        ESTHER  -        Vidya Balan
  • ·        JOANNA -        Kalki  Koechlin
  • ·        GAURI     -       Radhika Apte
  • ·        AARADHYA- Genelia D'zousa ]

1.      SONAKSHI SINHA/ NAYANTARA/ ANUSHREE as TEJASWI ( Teju)

Age: 30
Education: BA Literature (Batch 2009-2012), MA Literature (Batch 2012-2014), BA in Criminal Justice ( 2014-2017)
Occupation: Sub – Inspector of Police
Relationship Status: Still Single, Thank You
Virtue: Different, Authoritative, loves and dedicated to her job
Flaws: Anger, arrogance, attitude, indifference
Biggest Dream: Already fulfilled; joining the police force

Is Tejaswi another adaptation of Angry Young Woman or is there more hidden behind that tag name? Tejaswi is in for a ride to realize some life lessons before it’s too late.

KAF (Kites are Flying) will take this ride with Tejaswi.

2.      DEEPIKA PADUKONE/ PRIYAMANI/ MANJU WARIER as THARA RAGHURAM/ THARA MAHESHWAR ( Thara)

Age: 30
Education: BA Lit (2009-2012), MA Literature (2012-2014), MSc. Maths(2014-2016)
Occupation: Housewife
Relationship Status:  Married for 6 years
Children: 4 year old Son
Virtue: An individual of great caliber, intelligent, sensible, ambitious, patriotic
Vice: Can’t take decisions on own because of her upbringing, a detached person to everything that doesn’t interest her. Not a perfect cut out for ideal wife and mother role.
Biggest Dream: To qualify Civil Service and serve the country

Thara’s story is not uncommon in our society. A woman of substance held hostage inside the invisible threads of male dominated world. She is expected to wither away in the clout of patriarchal society around her.

Will she be able to achieve her dream of decades? Or will she become a weed over the decades? It is for KAF to explore....

3.      KANGANA RANAUT / NITYA MENON / PARVATHY MENON as AZMIA BILAAL/ AZMIA KHALEEL KHAN (Azmi)

Age: 29
Education: BA Literature (2009 – not completed)
Occupation: Housewife
Relationship Status: 11 years of intolerance to continue or not?!
Virtue: Headstrong girl with dreams and talent; doesn’t go down without a fight, a bold soul
Vice: Belonged to a poor orthodox family which didn’t value a woman’s life
Biggest Dream: WAS to be educated and qualified enough to support her family. In simple words, be an ACHIEVER in life.

The actual purpose of a burqa worn by a Muslim woman is meant to protect her purity, by concealing her body. But the truth is, often it conceals not just the body. Azmia Bilaal aka Azmia Khaleel Khan is a proof of this statement. Religion is a way to God; but some use it as a cross road to hell. A budding rose was nipped in the bud; but Azmia stands for a brave soul. Even if she was not allowed to blossom, she for one won’t get withered away.

KAF is the story of Azmia’s struggle against her burqa, the orthodoxy practiced in the name of religion and above all the fate that was casted upon her. It is the fight of her life, for a life, and finally to a life.

4.  Kongana sen / SNEHA / KAVYA MADHAVAN as ANJALI PRAKASH/ ANJALI ASHOK ( Anju)

Age: 31
Education: BA literature ( 2009-2012)
Occupation: Government Job, Secretariat
Relationship Status: Married for 10 years
Children: 3 sons
Virtue: Very cultured and traditional, loves her husband no matter what, dedicated completely to her family, loving and caring to others
Vice: very cultured and traditional, loves her husband no matter what, dedicated completely to family, loving and caring to others and none to own soul
Biggest Dream: To be the perfect wife, mother and have the perfect family that is often portrayed in the Utopian dream!

She ran all her life trying to please others, fulfilling others ‘expectations of her. She never had a moment to take respite from this mad race, for herself. First it was about being the obedient daughter who made her parents proud. Then it was about being the well behaved daughter-in-law and the perfect wife. Then motherhood came knocking and that became another field to prove her credentials. In short, a girl who forgot to realize the meaning of ‘HER SELF’!

KAF deals with how Anjali Ashok learns about herself. It is a tale of Anjali’s discovery of her ‘self’.

5.      VIDHYA BALAN/ ANJALI / MALLIKA as ESTHER EVA EPPAN/ ESTHER EVA LOIS ( Eva)

Age: 31
Education: BA Literature (2010-2012), MA Literature (2012-2014), B.ed
Occupation:  Teacher at St. Mary School
Relationship Status: 6 years of happily ever after
Children: One daughter and one son – 5 and 3 year old
Virtue: Capable, perfectionist, God fearing, obedient, well mannered
Vice: Cleanliness freak, obsessed with four person syndrome, a tiny winy bit of inferiority complex, and a bit too fond of luxurious lifestyle
Biggest Dream: To have her own fairy tale with her prince charming and angel like kids!

A girl born and brought up in a God fearing middle class family tends to have some common traits. Like for example, she is God fearing, values family and relations a lot, knows the value of money and handles it carefully, tends to be responsible and capable in a very early age and have life goals that are realistic and practical for herself. Esther also had these qualities. But she was not just a commoner. She had fire inside her which she douched for practical reasons. For her, having a job is more important than establishing a career. Security and stability is more important in a married life. Protection and care is what she expects from the institution of family. Amidst all this practicality, the feisty Esther got lost.

Will Esther evolve herself from the graveyard she pitched for herself? It’s for KAF to say.

6.      KALKI koechlin/ TASPSEE/ SHRINDA as JOANNA JOYCE (Jo)

Age: 29
Education: BA literature (2010- 2012 batch), Bachelor in Journalism and Mass communication (BJMS)
Occupation: Journalist
Relationship status: Still Married, No thank you
Children: One daughter – 3 year old
Virtue: Cool, easy going, takes life as it comes, strong and bold in her own style
Vice: Never shows her real emotions and has a violent streak at times, an air of superiority complex
Biggest Dream: To become a successful ‘and’ satisfied individual.

She is someone you can never figure out fully. At one moment, she is the most strong and sensible, play it cool kind of a person. And at the next, she will be at your throat screaming her lungs down if need be. She is the perfect blend of coolness and violence, of sensibility and immatureness.

KAF is also the bildungsroman (coming-of age) of Joanna Joyce and how she deals with the situations in her life shedding her ego.

7.      RADHIKA APTE / KRITI KHARBANDA / RIMA KALLINGAL as GAURI KRISHNA/  GAURI MADHAV

Age: 29
Education: BA literature (2010-2012), MA Literature (2012-2014)
Occupation: Credit officer, Union Bank
Relationship Status: Married for 10 years, will be divorced in months
Children: One daughter ( 5)
Virtue: Practical, down to earth, sensible, mature, realistic
Vice: Have fewer aspirations from life; often very hard on herself.
Biggest Dream: Dreams are not for real life...

She is a girl who only wanted a normal life - a secure job, a loving family and security in life. And she had it all and was really happy with her life. But suddenly when the wild card in the deck threw away her well planned life for the next 30 years, she could do nothing but pick up the leftover pieces and start over.

Will she be able to, forms one part of the crux of KAF.

8.      PARINEETI CHOPRA/ GENELIA D’ZOUSA/ BHAVANA as AARADHYA ABHIRAM ( Aaru)

Age: 29
Education: BA literature (2010-2012), MA Literature (2012-2014)
Occupation: Handling father’s business, and philanthropist
Relationship Status: Happily married for 7 years now
Children: One son (6) and twins – 2 daughters (3)
Virtue: Frank, good at counselling/advising, mature, persistent, strong mindset
Vice: Lazy, aimless, judgmental, frank, has a pinch of ego and superiority complex
Biggest Dream: To love passionately, to work passionately, and to live with contentment

She is someone who wishes to be invisible and spent most of her life inside her beautiful home away from the noises of the world. She wants a simple life, where she is available for all the needs of her kids, be a loving wife to her husband and have a decent lifestyle with nothing excess or less. And she got a straight out of a fairy tale prince charming for husband, lots of children whom she loves, financially successful life and a business heritage to take forward. To top it, she is also involved in social services which seem to be her cream area. She fairly had an easy life and anyone would wish for a life like hers.

But is her life as easy as it seems? Or are there fissures on the wall? Fairy tales are loved and cherished by majority but how does it feel to live one? It’s for KAF to tell us.

Aaradhya is going to be the spokesperson for the majority of the story.

KITES ARE FLYING

PROLOGUE

College days.....

The most wonderful period of life....

Matargasti, jawaani, deewani, badameez dil, tamasha.....you can pull out any of the Ranbir-Deepika film titles or songs to describe this period in your life. It’s all of that and more....

Life will never be the same before or after it....that is one unique experience....

College is the best time in everyone’s life. You blossom, grow and evolve on one side; but on the other side you never grow up and indulge in all kinds of nautankis and mastis that you could do in one lifetime. This is true for men and women alike but with a slight difference. For majority of women, college is the only time when they get to do all this...

8 individuals......

8 varieties of characters.......

8 different lives.....

Bond together by a single thread of friendship.......

Days, weeks, months, years of your life.... where you are leaving the innocence of childhood and accepting the maturity of adulthood....you do that with your friends, alongside them....

And once adult life arrives, friendship fades away before other priorities of life. Each one has to move on with their respective lives....and what are left are just the memories.....

The friendship, which was the biggest thrill....fun....the moments of ecstasy in your life till then..... leaves without a warning from your life. Same happened with the 8 girls/women of this story.

But after 8-10 years of college, after years of giving up friends and friendship for family, career and other priorities; when you find yourself at cross roads with these same priorities, the life you have build until then....... that old bond of friendship calls out to each of them.

Will their friendship help them in their individual lives? Will they be able to help each other in much more ways than they expected? Or will it just be an awkward reunion where they find themselves grown over their friendship?

Kites are Flying is going to explore the lives of these 8 women with their friendship at its backdrop.

Hope you will be with me in this ride too. This is not an Arnav-Kushi story. But this will be that one tale which all of you could relate or might relate to years later after experiencing some of it in your own life. I hope, you guys will be with me despite Arshi fandom and give me your valuable suggestions and comments on blog and help me develop myself and yourself along with this story in coming days.

Since it’s not an Arshi fan-fic I can’t post it on IF or MED. So I will be posting this on my blog. I hardly have readers who comment there and it has not bothered me till now since I got reviews from IF and MED. But now, this story solely depends on your comments on blog. Hope you guys will be gracious enough to encourage me with this new venture. This story is very important to me. It has shades of my own life as well as people whom I know and of course a generalized imagination of mass population’s life in India. I’m not intending to hurt anyone but like all my other stories reality will be kept intact while you all know that I don’t forget the entertainment factor a good cinema/story should offer.

Waiting to know your response guys. Only then I will decide when to start with this one.

Please do read and comment on blog itself. Blog is open to all. Hence you can easily comment there. If any difficulty let me know.

CHAPTER – 13

Arnav: Haan....ya.... naaa.

Kushi (taking a moment and not disturbing their eye lock): Haan.

Arnav (fist pumping in air): Yessssssss!!!!!!!! Wohooooo

Kushi (anxious): Hey wait. I don’t mean I love you. I just....

Arnav (grinning): Patha hai. You are still to fall for me.

Kushi sighed seeing he is not misunderstanding. But before she could open her mouth, Arnav said something which left her shocked.

Arnav: But I will take care of that. Wooing my woman is very easy for me. Especially if that lady is you, Kushiiii..... ( He winked at her with his cheeky smirk).

Kushi for the first time felt a warm feeling clenching her heart, and she feared losing this battle already..... But she soon found her voice back to clear few things before everything left her hands.

Kushi: I want to talk in detail about this dating business with you. So that we both are on the same page and there will be no arguments over it later on.

Arnav : Ohhoo....so you want to be on the same page with me eh?!

He was grinning while Kushi rolled her eyes trying to hide her flustered state.

Kushi: Arnav...be serious for one minute please.

Arnav: Ok ok doctor. Tell me.

Kushi: You know that we are not sure where this will head. So we must be ready for any outcome. And it should not affect our lives in a bad way. A lot is at stake if we decide not to move ahead.

Arnav: I know. I promise if we are not reaching a happy conclusion to this dating, then we will at least part on good terms. We will be friends, always I promise.

Kushi (nodding): Thank you. I need that guarantee from you.

Arnav: Of course Kushi. See all I’m asking you is to explore this thing between us. I know, sometimes we will click; sometimes you might not feel what I’m feeling. Then I won’t force you. You will have your choice, that’s my word.

Kushi smiled and nodded at him.

Arnav: So our dating officially starts tonight?

Kushi: Not tonight mister; I have duty and its Tuesday. Nothing should be given a start on Tuesday.

Arnav: Seriously, traditions to begin such a thing?

Kushi: Arnav...my belief if my belief...

Arnav: Hmm.....chalo teek hai. Waise bhi I’m also tired. We’ll start afresh tomorrow (yawnnnn)

He winked amidst yawning. Kushi rolled her eyes and left from there yelling a bye to him.

                                         ***************

That day when she left Arnav after agreeing to date him, Kushi felt her heart light. She did not know why she was feeling relieved. In the next few weeks, again she always felt light hearted. She was disturbed too; but in a different and happy way. She was smiling more, feeling fresh each morning, looking more beautiful when she views herself in the mirror. There was some change around her, she felt. But pagli, did not realise the change was within her. Nothing has changed around her but within her. She felt each day is going to be a new day for her; there is hope, expectation and excitement in each moment. She didn’t realise it, but she knew something, something is different.

Music

Kushi: Haan.....something is different. Pata nahi kya....

Naye-naye naina mere dhoonde hain
My new vision is searching
Dar-badar kyun tujhe
Everywhere for You

Another thing I noticed is that my eyes have now started to search for Arnav everywhere. And when I see him, it feels different....I seem to look at him with new eyes or new vision. Something has changed about him.....

(We see Kushi entering the hospital and Arnav coming from the opposite side to greet her in his usual charming way while she keeps looking at him with wondrous eyes)

Naye-naye manzar yeh tak te hain
These new scenes around me, why are they staring
Iss kadar kyun mujhe
At me this way

Everyone and everything looks different. And people have started looking at me strangely too. I wonder why....

(We see Kushi walking towards her cabin and people hushing around her looking in her direction)

Zara-zara phoolon pe jhadne laga dil mera
Slowly slowly my heart started disliking the flowers now

Talking over phone for endless hours, chats, sms, and pings has now become routine for us....

(We see Kushi smiling seeing an SMS before entering OP)

Zara-zara kaanton se lagne laga dil mera
Slowly slowly my heart started falling for the thorns now

Seeing him, talking to him, being with him all the time has become exciting, thrilling and a new experience for me. Is this ok? Is this right? Am I still unsure....oh yes!!!!!

(Kushi is sitting in the canteen with Arnav who is talking nineteen to dozen while she is lost in him and her thoughts while camera rounds them)

Main pareshaan pareshan pareshaan pareshaan
I am confused, confused (surprised), confused (disturbed)
Aatishein woh kahaan
Where are the fireworks
Main pareshaan pareshan pareshaan pareshaan
I am confused, confused (surprised), confused (disturbed)
Ranjishein hain dhuaan haan...
The complaints have disappeared like smoke

Imagine the neat and tidy Kushi taking dresses from her cupboard and throwing them one after the other in the air and dancing amidst the strewn clothes......in her pjs without brushing and combing her hair.......very unlikely scene for those who know the impeccable and cleanliness maniac Kushi!!!!!

Music

Voice over of Kushi - The friendship is still there, but unconsciously more colours are infused into that bond slowly.....and did we notice it.....I don’t know......

( We see them talking, meeting for dinners, spending time out, having a late night bike ride lost in their talks like friends have)

Gash khaake galiyaan
The streets after getting a jolt and fainting
Mudne lagi hain mudne lagi hain
Have started changing their course

Now when he hugs me, holds my hand, pats my cheek, it feels different. Is he feeling it too? Maybe yes, he is in love with me right? But what about me, what am I actually feeling?

( At one end we find Arnav and Kushi talking and hugging in usual manner.....but at the right corner we find a virtual image of Kushi standing there watching this scene and singing to herself with a lovelorn expression)

Raahon se teri judney lagi hain judney lagi hai
They have started joining themselves to Your roads

Nowadays when he praises me, I find myself blushing a little...maybe in my mind.....I feel like a woman with him now....and.....it does feel good you know...

(The virtual image of Kushi talking to us these lines with a starry night backdrop)

Chaubaare saare yeh meelon ke maare se
All these squares, which are tired of the long distances
Poochhe hain tera pata
Are asking for Your address

What are all these feelings? Where are we heading to? Am I.....or is it just an infatuation? Is it natural? What is the real address of all these feelings?

(Kushi sitting on her window sill in her apartment gazing out and asking herself these questions)

Zara zara chalne se thakne laga dil mera
Slowly slowly I am getting tired of walking
Zara zara udne ko karne laga dil mera
Slowly slowly my hearts is feeling like it wants to fly

Why does my heart feel like it’s living a dream? Yes falling in love is my dream; experiencing love is my dream, finding a prince charming one day is my dream.....but is Arnav the answer to all my dreams?????

(Kushi, Arnav, Anjali and Viren are on a weekend outing to countryside and there we see Kushi walking at a distance from the group who is having fun and asking herself these questions......her eyes only on Arnav who is enjoying his time with his sister)

Main pareshaan pareshan pareshaan pareshaan
I am confused, confused (surprised), confused (disturbed)
Dilkashi ka samaa
Its a weather full of love
Main pareshaan pareshan pareshaan pareshaan
I am confused, confused (surprised), confused (disturbed)
Khwahison ka samaa
Its a weather full of expectations

Imagine Kushi dancing and singing suddenly when she was checking a patient amidst a ward of patients who looks at her in astonishment.  She floats away in her dream through the corridors of the hospital gaining shocked attention from everyone around her........something that no one ever dreamed of from a disciplined and strictly professional Kushi, she never lost her head when it comes to work. Yeh ho kya raha hai is ladki ko?!

MUSIC

Voiceover of Kushi - Arnav was a boy for me till now; a handsome guy. But now, I’m seeing him more like a ‘handsome guy’. I always dreamt of a manly person who looked rough and tough, is matured, responsible, an epitome of angry young man that every girl girlishly dreams of.........then why am I feeling all that I’m feeling for Arnav when he couldn’t be any different from my dream man?!......Why.....

(We see Kushi and Arnav in a pub and Arnav dancing with the crowd while Kushi stares at him with these thoughts going on in her head)

Be-baat khud pe marne lagi hoon
Without any reason, I have started dying for myself (falling in love with myself)
Marne lagi hoon
I have started dying (falling in love)

I have been before him in my worst looking avatars, but now I’m taking extra efforts to dress up. Why.... do I want to impress him? Is it just because I’m dating him....And I’m starting to love myself in a new way now....all this is new for me.....

(We see Kushi before the mirror checking dresses after dress and finally settling down on one. Finally dressed she passes a flying kiss to her own reflection)

Bebaak aahein bharne lagi hoon
Without any worries, I am sighing
Bharne lagi hoon
I am sighing

His cool attitude for everything irritates me; his foot in mouth syndrome frustrated me; his immatureness gets me bored; yet I found all these same traits cute. Why...............

(We see Arnav joking around with some other female nurses; Kushi sees and pulls him from there in the name of work...hiding her real emotions)

Chaahat ke cheete hai, khaare bhi meethe hai
These are the droplets of love, even the sour tastes sweet
Main kya se kya ho gayi
I have become what from what

Before I did not mind the pose in which I sat before him; I wasn’t bothered about the way I talked or behaved around him before. Then why am I conscious of all this suddenly around him? I don’t want this....yet I want this....haai main kya se kya ho gayi.....

(We see a conscious Kushi sitting before Arnav in a restaurant listening to Arnav who is going on with his talks and nakras.... while the virtual image of Kushi sighs and rests herself on the pillar by her side inside the restaurant singing and watching over them)

Zara-zara fitrat badalne laga dil mera
Slowly slowly my heart is changing its loyalty
Zara-zara kismat se ladne laga dil mera
Slowly slowly my heart is fighting against destiny

Another thing that surprised me is I’m into taking sneaky peeks at him when he is not noticing and I feel shy and girlish around him. When he presents me with flowers, chocolates, take me out on dinners, lunches, shopping, late night drives...I’m enjoying his company.  I always did enjoy his company; but enjoying a man’s company as a friend and as a prospective date is different.

(We see Kushi taking a sneek peak at Arnav when they are on his bike and when Arnav turns his head she moves her head down to avoid him catching her and then she closing her eyes and smiling with the breeze playing with her hair....happy and content)

Music and then suddenly  kaise madhhosiyen, mastiyaan....

And Kushi was realising the difference slowly. She was realising what is happening to her. Slowly her heart is changing its loyalty....its fighting her destiny.......

Main pareshaan pareshan pareshan pareshaan
I am confused, confused (surprised), confused (disturbed)
Kaisi madhoshiyaan...
What are these intoxications
Main pareshaan pareshaan pareshaan pareshaan
I am confused, confused (surprised), confused (disturbed)
Mastiyaan Mastiyaan...
Joyful times
Main pareshaan pareshan pareshaan pareshaan
I am confused, confused (surprised), confused (disturbed)
Aatishein woh kahaan
Where are the fireworks
Main pareshaan pareshan pareshaan pareshaan
I am confused, confused (surprised), confused (disturbed)
Ranjishein hain dhuaan haan...
The complaints have disappeared like smoke

She did not know how to deal with this. Should she allow what is happening to her, to what is brewing between Arnav and her? Or should she ignore it listening to the sane voice in her head? She did not know. And unlike all other times, she did not want to take advises from others. This is one decision which she wants to do from within her.

(We see Kushi dancing with kids on a meadow releasing a bunch of balloons in air.....

We see her playing in rain in Lucknow streets singing....

Clouding her with snow balls and playing in snow singing....

We see her driving through the lane amidst the green meadows of Canada singing to herself loudly and happily.....)

Music winding up.....

Kushi decided.....there is no point in letting go a guy who actually adores you, respects you and gives you your space. And there is no point in giving up the only feeling she has had ever in her life for a man. And why should she? Her family is never going to find a guy for her whom she will come to love. Their aspirations and hers are different. And when she had no choice of her own, going ahead with their plan was okay. After all she was incapable of falling in love or making a guy fall for her. But now when she HAS an option and that too a dhamakedhar one, why should she let go?

Age, job, immaturedness....all these are not even reasons enough now to let go of Arnav. Her family will also accept Arnav over time. Just thoda time dena hai. Woh toh degi. Once I get them to agree to consider Arnav, then the rest I don’t have to worry about. Arnav is there na!

She smiled a relieved and proud smile. She took the phone and dialled Arnav’s number.

Kushi: Arnav?

Arnav: Yes sweetheart

Kushi (smiling shyly): I want to talk to you. It’s important.

Arnav (sat up on his elbows with a ‘man mein laddoo’expression): Okay talk.

Kushi: No, not like this, in person. Can you meet me at Opera Mall at 7 today?

Arnav: Okay. Cool. Should I pick you up?

Kushi: No. You just be on time. And khabardar late hua toh.

Arnav (bowing his head before phone): Okay madam.

Kushi giggled and kept the phone.

The next few hours saw Kushi making some arrangements for the evening. She then got dumped under the number of dresses she pulled out for the evening. Then she ran to the spa for a quick appointment.

When the clock struck 6.30, Kushi was all set and ready in a yellow shimmering dress. She checked her appearance once again in the mirror before getting her clutch and leaving the apartment. When she closed the door, she got a call from Payal bhabhi.

Kushi (smiling widely): Bhabhi....I was about to call you tonight.

But what she heard on the other side made her rooted to the spot.

On the other hand, Arnav was already at Opera mall, waiting for his lady love in a dashing white shirt which she loved and a bouquet of daffodils in his hand.

Will Kushi come to Opera mall after the call from her bhabhi???? Wait for the next update.

GUYSSS,,,,

I want to share good news. I'm coming up with a new story. Read the post below to see the prologue and yes this one will be on blog only. So do read it carefully and let me know your reviews and if you are willing to read on blog.
